Oh, I forgot a couple more!

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin is a great mystery with quite a bit of humor.

And the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander were perfect fantasy books for a non-fantasy reader like myself. We had to read one for class, but I ended up reading them all.
