I was just talking to my sister about this on a FaceTime call -- so normalized now, in this Plague Year... I used to hate them. She's a principal in Oakland now -- was a teacher for almost twenty years, though most of those a TSA -- Teacher on Special Assignment, which is sometimes sort of quasi-admin. Anyway, she's the principal at an elementary school in a pretty posh neighborhood. She does Friday Morning Assemblies via Zoom, and she addressed the storming in Assembly (what grade is Athena in, now? She's so old! I feel like fourth or fifth, but she might even be sixth, which is crazy). She contextualized it, because there had been presentation last Fall about democracy and how important voting rights are and how groups of people have had to fight to get those rights, and then about the election and so on (certainly more than my district did; I was dissuaded by admin AND colleagues from even doing a mock election Google Form, which I had naively thought could be an interesting school-wide distance learning effort... ugh). And because she knows there are kindergartners there, she started off with a map of the US to show how far away DC is! I laugh, but actually I had to make the same point in November when I had middle school students worried about riots in the street that might happen here by disgruntled Trumpers.
