I don't know about pattern recognition as a measure of intelligence. I don't think that I was great at those tests they used to give to determine whether you got into "gifted & talented" programs in elementary school, although I got in. The other comment my graduate advisor said was "you notice things," so it was less about being able to find a hidden pattern and more about being able to look at data or whatever and concoct an explanation.
