Chinese is not as intimidating if you start with Mandarin, and think of the characters as almost like hieroglyphic puzzles. Reading comics is great for picking up context - I don't know if you use it for the other languages you learned. (And simplified Chinese is way easier.) There was an article I came across about how even Chinese adults don't remember how to write most of the more complex characters since they're so used to using the computer to type everything out.
