Why is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe separated out from the rest of the Chronicles of Narnia? Same thing with Hamlet and the complete works of Shakespeare.
I also liked The Kite Runner a good deal. And The Time Traveller's Wife -- you should read it for the Chicago setting alone, even though there are other good things in it. (Especially if you keep envisioning Henry as Johnny Depp or Robert Downey Jr.!)
Interesting about Drabble and Byatt, though I confess I've read neither. I just told mistersmearcase in an email that I'm reading The House of Mirth and loving it. I feel a Wharton/James kick coming on.
