The music of my youth

Man, I forgot how much I liked Cyndi Lauper. How could I forget that? Lavamus is a really cheap download site, infinitely to be preferred to iTunes -- ten songs for the price of one, on iTunes, basically. But I often have trouble thinking of WHAT music I might like to download, unless someone else more aware than I gives me a gentle nudge or a strong shove as the case may be.

M. reminded me this weekend that he used to get free concert tix as one benefit of his otherwise horrible former job, and that he saw a lot of music he might not have chosen, had he been paying for the ticket. One of the shows was Cyndi Lauper. He said she rocked, even twenty years after her heyday.

So I've just downloaded several of her songs -- the major ones: "She Bop," "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," "Time After Time," (which I'd totally forgotten she'd done) and "All Through the Night." The last two are so fucking romantic... I'd totally forgotten about them, or that she did them, with her squeaky high soprano I can't reach. I like them.

I remember arguing with more naive friends in high school about "She Bop", because they absolutely refused to believe that it was an ode to masturbation. Listening to it now, I'm tempted to use it to teach the conjugation of verbs for my English Language Learners. Wouldn't that be more motivating than "I am, you are, he or she is..."? I suppose it's a little misleading because it should be "she BOPS", but whatever.

I also got some Sinead O'Connor, which I only own on tape cassette, and some Jarvis Cocker, which isn't music of my youth at all, but of my present, I guess. I got his "Running the World", which is apparently on the soundtrack for Children of Men. I heard of it from a friend of mine in Britain, not from that movie. I think the real title is what the chorus says, which is "Cunts Are Still Running the World." A very class conscious song. I recommend it.

She remains fun and genuinely talented. Did I remember to put "I'm Gonna be Strong" on your opera CD? Because I sometimes do that, because of the way she weilds her vocal chops. Her recent cover of "At Last" is also impressive and doesn't hew too uncomfortably close to Etta James, which is wise because the original is not to be fucked with. Anyway, Lauper, yeah, so many of her songs are actually good and not just 80's nostalgia. p.s. if you're a Hedwig fan, she's on the generally uninspired covers album doing an excellent "Midnight Radio."

I am definitely a Hedwig fan. I don't remember that song. Hm. Off topic, did you see the other film by that person, the title of which I have now lost from my head? Wait -- Shortbus. That film? If so, what did you think? I have not seen it yet, but I meant to.

CL's rendition of "True Colors" is also nice for a schlock-lover like me....

I haven't seen much of your schlock-loving, lately. I don't even know that song, actually.

Her Christmas CD (Merry Christmas...Have A Nice Life) is awesome.

I love Cyndi Lauper. <3

Time after Time is in one of the Karaoke Revolution games, and I managed to get a perfect score on it... :D

I was just wondering about myself and Cyndi Lauper as a karaoke pairing. I get terribly het up about karaoke, because I like singing and I don't like the selections, and I'm a wee bit perfectionist about it, unless I'm terribly drunk.

Is karaoke revolution like DDR, but not dancing? If so, brilliant.

Yeah, it is. It's out mostly for Playstation 2 but also for Xbox. There are several editions out, the latest one being American Idol edition (meh for the tie-in, but the songlist is fine).

The songlist is always varied (except for the CMT edition which is, of course, strictly country songs) and the quality of the covers is extremely high -- it's on a par with the pro karaoke stuff you find and sometimes it's even superior to it.

The games also include a true karaoke mode, if you prefer singing the songs your way (for instance, I sing the second half of the Tina Turner version of Proud Mary much rockier than she does).

I wish there were more thematic editions of the game, but at least the way it is now, there's something for all tastes (except for hip-hop fans, about the only genre not covered whatsoever in the series).

I think you played that Cocker song for me at Christmas, yes? He isn't related to Joe, is he?

I sometimes watch the VH1 because I like mindless crap, and they had something about the strangest moments in music, and there was a clip about Cyndi singing in Central Park during a concert -- and a bird crapped in her mouth. Being a trouper, she finished the song and then went backstage and gargled with Clorox or whatever. One of the commentators was this metal dude who was saying "Whoa! That's like the most metal thing ever!" Which I found oddly charming.

I absolutely adore Cindy Lauper....I still have the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun album I got when I was 8. I just downloaded her greatest hits. I acutally use a site called allofmp3.com. They have songs for about 15c each. It's out of Russia and it's supposedly legal but I'm not sure....to get money on the site you have to go through some strange European Union token buying system since Visa refuses to do business with them. Still you can't beat an entire album for $1.50.
Have you ever heard of the band Pulp? It was started by Jarvis Cocker back in the 90's. They were a part of the big mid-90's Britpop explosion which I love...Different Class was their big album back then. I haven't heard any of his new stuff but I'll definitely check it out.
